Free Legal Advice & Support

IPSEA

Free legally-based advice for parents of children with special educational needs, including help with EHC needs assessments and appeals.

SOS SEN

Free independent helpline offering support and advice to parents of children with special educational needs across England and Wales.

SEND IASS

Every local authority has a SEND Information, Advice and Support Service providing free, impartial advice to parents and young people.

Council for Disabled Children

The umbrella body for the disabled children's sector in England, providing policy guidance and resources for families.

Tribunal & Appeals

First-tier Tribunal (SEND)

The tribunal that hears appeals against local authority decisions about EHC needs assessments and plans. You can register an appeal online.

SEND Mediation

Before appealing to the Tribunal you must contact a mediation adviser. Mediation is free for parents and can resolve disputes without a hearing.

The statutory guidance that local authorities, schools and health bodies must follow when supporting children and young people with SEN.

Children and Families Act 2014

The primary legislation underpinning the EHCP system. Part 3 covers special educational needs and disability.

Local Offer

Every local authority must publish a Local Offer setting out the support available for children and young people with SEN in their area. Search for your council's Local Offer online.
